Buzzer-Beater Spoils Strong Defensive Effort in Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Illinois State held Valparaiso without a field goal for 13:50 between the first and second halves; however, a buzzer-beating half-court shot by the Crusaders' Markus Golder gave the hosts the 58-56 MVC-opening win.

How It Happened

Valparaiso got on the board first with a Nick Fazekas three-point basket 28 seconds into the contest, before the Redbirds ran off nine straight points over a three-and-a-half-minute span, leading 9-3 with 16 minutes to play in the opening period. After the Crusaders fought back, and led by four with 4:58 to play, the ISU defense clamped down and held the hosts without a basket for the remainder of the half and fought back to tie the game at 26 points apiece heading into the locker room at halftime.
