CHAMPAIGN — Illinois’ home and Big Ten opener did not go according to plan Friday, as the Illini were thumped by Nebraska 10-2 in five innings at Eichelberger Field.
The Cornhuskers (19-9, 1-0 Big Ten) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Cassie McClure first-inning single.
But they poured it on in the second frame, tallying eight times.
Nebraska led 10-0 before an Illini crossed the plate. Annie Fleming and Kylie Johnson each netted an RBI in the fourth inning for Illinois (19-10, 0-1). The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday due to expected inclement weather Sunday.
