SUGAR GROVE — Illinois senior-to-be Charlie Danielson lost in the first round of match play Friday at the 113th Western Amateur Championship at Rich Harvest Farms.
Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif., made a hole-in-one and five birdies on the front nine en route to a 3-and-2 victory against Danielson.
Danielson cut his deficit with birdies on Nos. 11 and 13, but the margin proved too much to overcome, and the match concluded on No. 16.
Affrunti makes cut. Andres Gonzales had 11 birdies and a bogey in a 21-point round Friday for a share of the lead with Brendan Steele at the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nev.
