UI proposes private firm handle food service at sports venues

CHAMPAIGN — Everything from hot dogs to buffets for athletes to fancy desserts in luxury suites will be provided by a private company at Illini sports venues starting this fall, if several multimillion-dollar contracts under consideration are approved.

The University of Illinois has reached a tentative agreement with the national food service giant Sodexo to provide hundreds of meals each week for athletes and fans in premium seats at Memorial Stadium and State Farm Center, starting this fall.

The five-year, $10 million contract, which must be approved by UI trustees next week, includes an option for a five-year renewal, for nearly $11.
