UI athlete seeks continuance in disorderly conduct case

URBANA — A University of Illinois softball player charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly lying about having been mugged is due back in court next month.

Stephanie Abello, 18, a freshman whose hometown is Batavia, had a pretrial appearance Tuesday in Champaign County Circuit Court, where her attorney, Andrea Bergstrom of Urbana, asked the judge to continue the case another month.

According to a UI police report, on Jan. 23, Abello told police that at about 8:30 p.m., she had been battered and robbed by an unknown man as she walked on Locust Street in Champaign.

She made the report to UI police at about 10:15 a.
