Looking back at 2018: The second commitment of the Lovie Smith era (behind Ricky Smalling) spent last fall at safety after starting his Illinois career as a wide receiver. The position switch didn't change Smith's status much, though, given he appeared primarily on special teams in the 10 games he played. He finished the 2018 season with 10 tackles and his first career forced fumble in the Illini win against Western Illinois.
Looking ahead to 2019: This spring saw Smith make another position switch, shifting back to wide receiver.
