Top 50 Illini Football Players of 2016: No. 41, Zarrian Holcombe

No. 41: Zarrian Holcombe, TE

Why he’s important: He plays a position that isn’t entirely the strongest for Illinois. Granted, it’s hard for a true freshman to acclimate himself right away to the college game. The season that Mikey Dudek produced in 2014 for Illinois is more the exception than the norm. But maybe Holcombe becomes the next Tim Brewster, Ken Dilger or even Josh Whitman. He’s got good size at 6 feet, 6 inches that coaches can’t teach, not even Lovie Smith. He’ll need to add weight to his 220-pound frame and clean up his run blocking, but any pass-catching skills he possesses would certainly be a bonus after Illinois tight ends only managed 19 receptions for 110 yards and three touchdowns last season.
