CHAMPAIGN — If you’re a fan looking for highlights, Ke’Shawn Vaughn threw a lightning bolt into Lovie Smith’s No. 1 defense with a 42-yard burst on Saturday’s first scrimmage play at Memorial Stadium.
Later on, young Jeff George, with dad Jeff George on the sideline, hit three consecutive passes of 20, 28 and 30 yards, then returned later to find tight end Andrew Davis for 21 and running back Kendrick Foster for 41 and a TD.
But with an estimated 5,000 fans in full buzz — they swarmed Smith afterward — this outing wasn’t about trying to impress with his best players.
