Preliminary setback doesn't deter Davis

CHARLESTON — Jon Davis’ stomach began to hurt Tuesday night, and by Thursday’s Class 1A state track and field preliminaries, he knew his plan for this weekend’s meet had to change.

Originally, the future Illini planned to shoot for the 1,600-meter run’s state-meet record of 4 minutes, 5.17 seconds, less than a second faster than his personal best, during Thursday’s preliminary, when he’d be fresh.

But as the stomach flu set in, that was no longer a viable option.

“I felt really crappy (Wednesday), and I felt really crappy (Thursday) when I woke up,” Davis said.
