CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fighting Illini men's track and field head coach Mike Turk has been selected by the United States Olympic Committee as the recipient of the 2014 Doc Counsilman Science Award Coach of the Year. Established in 2004, the Doc Counsilman Science Award recognizes a coach who utilizes scientific techniques and equipment as an integral part of his/her coaching methods or has created innovative ways to use sport science.
It has been a very successful year on all levels for the Turk. Last summer, Turk helped coach former Illinois women's discus throw Gia Lewis-Smallwood to her third straight United States Track & Field Outdoor Championships discus title this past weekend.
