Lineman keeps late father in thoughts

FRANKFORT — He made the commitment in the summer. And never wavered.

Wednesday morning, during a ceremony at Lincoln-Way East High School’s Griffins’ Lair, Kurt Gavin will sign his college letter of intent. It will be faxed to the Illinois football office, and the deal will be done. Gavin will play college football for Bill Cubit.

“I’m really excited and more like relieved,” Gavin said. “It’s cool to be with the team.”

Gavin will sign with his mom, Lori, and his two brothers in the room.

One important person will be missing: his late father Dan, who died of liver cancer early in Kurt’s high school career.
