Golfers advance in NCAAs despite rough day

EUGENE, Ore. — For a time Sunday, the Illinois golf team’s run at the NCAA Championships was in jeopardy. The Illini were outside the top 15 after three rounds of stroke play and in danger of being sent home.

But the field came back to the Illini, and Mike Small’s team remained in the top 10. Barely.
Despite a 9-over round at Eugene Country Club, the Illini are tied for ninth going into today’s final round of stroke play.

“(Sunday) was not the kind of push we were looking for in the third round,” Small said. “This was a moving day, and we didn’t take advantage of that.
