I first heard from Marv Furman about 25 years ago. One of my articles about his beloved Illini caught Marv's attention and he called me out the blue.
It wasn't a short talk. They never are with Marv.
He told me his background at Illinois, how he came to school in Champaign from Brooklyn after the war. He told me about his connection to the late Harry Combes.
He asked questions. Many, many questions. He wanted to know about the current team and the future. He asked my opinion on the coaching staff.
And we talked about my family.
