Tim Beckman has added another player to his 2016 recruiting class. Drake Spears, a 6'1/195 pound safety from Aurora, IL (West Aurora), has committed to the Illini during a visit to Champaign. He's currently rated as the No. 1384 overall recruit and No. 30 Illinois recruit in 247Sports' composite rankings. In addition to the Illini, Spears also held a scholarship offer from Western Michigan.

Spears is the fifth member of Illinois' 2016 recruiting class; he joins Kentrail Moran (3-star RB), Eli Peters (3-star QB), Juwuane Parchman (3-star S), and Amani Jones (2-star LB).
