After a first period high on effort but low on clear-cut chances, Ben Whiteman almost put Preston ahead two minutes after the restart when his shot deflected wide.
Preston had a penalty appeal turned down after Will Keane felt he was pulled down in the box after Emil Riis had had a shot saved by Ryan Allsop.
Jaden Philogene and Ryan Giles had shots saved for Hull, while Whiteman, Ali McCann and Liam Millar went close for Preston.
Hull remain in sixth place in the table, three points clear of eighth-placed North End.
