Washington QB Alex Smith suffers gruesome broken leg, Colt McCoy steps in

LANDOVER, Md. -- Washington veteran quarterback Alex Smith suffered a gruesome injury reminiscent of the bone sticking out of the bloody leg of former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann on a Lawrence Taylor hit three decades ago.

During the Texans' 23-21 win at FedEx Field Smith broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg when it buckled underneath him on a sack by cornerback Kareem Jackson where he was also hit by defensive end J.J. Watt. He went to an area hospital to undergo surgery to repair the damage and is out for the season.

"Alex's leg is exactly like mine 33 yrs ago," Theismann wrote on Twitter.
