Texans' Whitney Mercilus excited to play for Mike Vrabel again

When the Texans convinced linebackers coach Mike Vrabel to remain with the AFC South franchise and resist an overture from Chip Kelly to become the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator, it ranked as one of the most pivotal moves of their offseason.

A fiery former Pro Bowl linebacker with the New England Patriots, Vrabel is learning behind defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. Crennel is one of the most experienced and highest-compensated defensive coordinators in the league.

A demanding coach who relates well to his players, Vrabel could eventually succeed Crennel down the road.

Instrumental in the development of outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus, Vrabel coached Brian Cushing, Benardrick McKinney, John Simon and Jadeveon Clowney last season.
