The Texans plan to start backup quarterback T.J. Yates against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wake of starter Tom Savage suffering a concussion against the San Francisco 49ers, according to coach Bill O'Brien.
Yates threw two touchdown passes against the 49ers in relief of Savage, who remains under the NFL concussion protocol.
“T.J. played good," Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins said. "To come here and not get many reps with the starters during the week, late notice like that, I think he stepped up.”
Although Yates hadn't played in a game since a Nov. 16, 2015 Texans win over the Indianapolis Colts during which he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and was replaced by Brandon Weeden, he performed well.
