Extra cushion in coverage costly for Texans' defense against Saints

The image was glaring at the end of the Texans' 30-28 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The Texans' defensive backs, especially cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph, Bradley Roby and Aaron Colvin, were playing far off the wide receivers and giving up plenty of cushion to try to prevent a long reception or touchdown pass.

And Saints veteran quarterback Drew Brees exploited the matchups, shredding an overhauled secondary to position kicker Wil Lutz for the game-winning 58-yard field goal.

First, Brees hit Ted Ginn Jr. for a 15-yard completion with Joseph making the tackle.

Then, Brees found Michael Thomas for an 11-yard completion with safety Justin Reid and backup corner Keion Crossen making the tackle.
