Texans Rumors: Re-Signing Ryan Mallett To Be Priority #1 This Offseason?

There are many Houston Texans fans who are clamoring for the team to find a quarterback via the draft or free agency, but one Texans writer believes the time is now to lock up Ryan Mallett long-term and invest in him.

"As for Mallett’s value to the Texans, this is the offense he has grown up in New England and the reason he was traded for by the Texans," Scout.com's PD Starr writes. "His knowledge of the system is evident and he understands what it takes to be successful in the offense."

The crop of free-agent options at quarterback in the NFL this offseason is weak to say the least, and Mallett could instantly vault to the top of teams' wishlists ahead of names like Matt Moore and Mark Sanchez.

Starr admits that Mallett and his agent will likely seek a short-term deal to maximize his value during a later free agency period, but he argues that the Texans should try to lock up Mallett now with the relative scarcity of top QBs that find themselves hitting free agency nowadays.
