U.S. women shut out Costa Rica to win CONCACAF Group A

The U.S. women’s national team cruised past Costa Rica in a 6-0 victory to win Group A and secure its place in the CONCACAF qualifying semifinals on Monday at BBVA Stadium.

Forward Christen Press scored in her fourth consecutive game in the 4th minute.

She bent a long run to the right side of the field then made sharp cut back left and lobbed a left-footed missile from just outside the area. It found the top corner of the net, well out of the outstretched Priscilla Tapia’s reach.

Six minutes later, captain Carli Lloyd helped double the lead when she threaded a pass through a pair of Costa Rican defenders to put Lindsey Horan in space, where she angled a shot to the corner of the net for her fifth goal of the competition.
