Goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin made three saves on the night but he wasn’t needed on the 13th shot of the penalty kick shootout when Houston rookie Sam Junqua’s shot floated over the crossbar, effectively handing Club America the 6-5 win on penalty kicks in a 1-1 draw with the Dynamo at BBVA Stadium on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the Leagues Cup.
Marchesin stopped Romell Qiuoto’s opening shot of the shootout. But with his Mexican club in position to win, teammate Roger Martinez booted a shot that sailed over the bar.
The Mexican club had seized control of the match after a defensive breakdown in the 73rd minute.
