TORONTO – Although third baseman Luis Valbuena is an option in an emergency, utility infielder Marwin Gonzalez is Chris Carter’s primary backup at first baseman.
Gonzalez started at first and committed a rare error during the Blue Jays’ three-run rally in the second inning. Two of the runs in that inning were unearned.
When asked if designated hitter Evan Gattis was an option to start at first, manager A.J. Hinch didn’t hesitate.
“Gattis isn’t an option,” Hinch said. “He’s played a little bit of left field and obviously can be an emergency catcher. The way this roster construction is it’s really Gonzalez.
