Astros’ bet on draft long shot Tyler White’s numbers is paying off

You can’t help but think of Jeremy Brown, the catcher made famous in the book “Moneyball” not because of his amateur performance but a body that doesn’t fit the usual ballplayer’s mold.

Tyler White, a righthanded first baseman at Class AAA Fresno, went 4-for-5 and drove in six runs on Monday night in a 10-4 win over New Orleans, homering as he improved his average with runners on base to .500 (39-for-78).

White, 24, is 5-11 and listed at 225 pounds — not the prettiest of builds. He was a 33rd round pick in 2013 out of Western Carolina University, a school that’s produced 11 big leaguers, per Baseball-Reference.
