The Astros finally completed the deal for Philadelphia Phillies’ hard-throwing reliever Ken Giles, and the trade is a bit different than what was originally conceived.
The Astros are giving up right-handed pitcher Vince Velasquez, former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel, left-handed pitcher Brett Oberholtzer, right-handed pitcher Thomas Eshelman and right-handed pitcher Harold Arauz. In returns, the Astros get Giles and 17-year-old shortstop Jonathan Arauz.
“Our primary objective this offseason has been to add quality arms to our bullpen,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. “Ken Giles is a premium pitcher who will play an important role by getting critical outs for the Astros for years to come.
