Gibson Johnson scored a layup with 6.3 seconds remaining early this morning to lift the University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team to a thrilling 64-63 victory over Florida Atlantic in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.
A vocal black-clad crowd of about 2,300 at the Stan Sheriff Center and ESPN “Tip-off Marathon” national TV audience watched as the Rainbow Warriors improved to 2-1. The Owls fell to 0-3.
Hawai’i led, 40-32, after Johnson’s reverse layup with 16:24 left in the game, but FAU chipped away and eventually tied it at 51-51 on Ronald Delph’s putback with 7:08 remaining.
