Snow falls on Haleakala but access denied due to safety reasons

About 1.5 inches of snow fell on Haleakala overnight and early morning Monday, forcing the national park to close the road at the 9,000 foot elevation and denying access to the snowfall due to safety issues. A heavy layer of ice covered the snow, creating the extremely hazardous road conditions, the park service said Monday. The road to the summit is closed at the Kalahaku Overlook at about the 9,000 foot elevation, where visitors will be turned around. The closures will remain in effect until conditions become safer, the park service said.
