UH-Hilo coach Tino Reyes figured it was business as usual when Kayla Balezentis left Monday’s match against Dominican with a finger injury, only adding to the Vulcans’ woes.
UH-Hilo had every reason to fold up and get out of town and hop on a plane home, but sometimes sports is weird.
The Vulcans followed up two uninspiring performances against lesser teams in Northern California with what can only be designated as a good win: 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 over the Penguins, who began the day in third place in the PacWest.
“They gutted it out,” Reyes said by phone in San Rafael.
