What Should the Packers Do About Darnell Savage’s Fifth-Year Option?

The Green Bay Packers have a tough decision to make regarding safety Darnell Savage. The Packers selected the former Maryland star in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft with the 21st overall pick. The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) gives teams the ability to sign rookies to a four-year deal for their entry-level contract. But for first-round draft picks, teams have the option to extend their contract by one more season. This is known as the fifth-year option and it must be exercised prior to the start of the player’s fourth season in the NFL.
