The Packers Have Enough Cap Space To Keep Their Own If They Delay Extensions

If the Packers were to extend Clark (or Bulaga and others) right now, as has been speculated about here on CHTV and elsewhere, and gave Clark a signing bonus of let us say $20 million over five years, his signing bonus proration would be $4 million per season. The problem is that $4 million would be assigned to the cap for 2019 and another $4 million for the 2020 season and thereafter. That is a total of $8 million less that would be available as salary cap space next March for the start of free agency. If the Packers wait until December 29th to extend Clark, there would only be one $4 million proration that would affect the cap space for 2020.
