Reports circulated earlier this week that the NFL wants to expand to an 18-game regular season. It won’t happen right away, but the league will look to do that when negotiating the next collective bargaining agreement. But is that a good idea?
The league had just increased the duration of the season from 16 games to 17 for the 2021 campaign. The league had a 16-game schedule from 1978 through the 2020 season.
There are some definite advantages. Obviously, from a selfish standpoint, football fans want more games. One extra week of games that count is certainly a welcome thing for many fans.
