New LSU defensive coordinator Daronte Jones started coaching career at Nicholls, left lasting impression

Daronte Jones spent one season as an assistant football coach at Nicholls in 2002. He still managed to leave a lasting impression on his former colleagues and players in Thibodaux.

Jones, who was named LSU’s new defensive coordinator on Jan. 26, worked as the safeties coach during the 2002 season under former Colonels coach Daryl Daye. It was the first major coaching job for Jones, who later moved up the coaching ladder with stops at UCLA and Wisconsin and as a defensive backs coach in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings.
