This past spring I produced High School Musical with my high school theatre group, and I feel like ever since then I cannot escape its cheesy melodies and on-the-nose Disneyfied life lessons.
At one point in the middle of the production (as in the movie), there is a big lunchroom number in which the ensemble sings:
“No no no,
Stick to the stuff you know
If you wanna be cool, follow one simple rule
Don’t mess with the flow, oh no
Stick to the status quo!”
Ultimately the themes and action of the show prove the opposite–defeating the status quo leads to character growth and higher achievement.
