Former Packer David Bakhtiari receives injury protection benefit

Cap expert Ken Ingalls reported on Monday that the Green Bay Packers will be paying out $2.05 million to former left tackle David Bakhtiari after he filed for an injury protection benefit to the league. The injury protection benefit is essentially a way for released players who fail off-season physicals for injuries that occurred in prior seasons to recoup cash.

Because the Packers released Bakhtiari with an injury designation, he qualified for this benefit. Teams are obligated to pay players their salary for “the season following the season of injury,” which in Bakhtiari’s case is the 2024 season after his 2023 injury.
