Early Front Runners to Succeed Mike McCarthy if Mark Murphy Decides to Pull the Plug

With the Packers season fracturing little by little with each passing week, many have begun to speculate about head coach Mike McCarthy's future with the team. McCarthy signed a 1-year extension prior to the 2018 season to prevent him from entering the campaign as a lame duck head coach. Although many thought that McCarthy should have suffered the same fate as former general manager Ted Thompson after last season's 7-9 disappointment, CEO Mark Murphy instead made the decision to replace Thompson, keep McCarthy, and rework the organization's power structure.

As part of the Green Bay Packers, new power structure, newly appointed general manager Brian Gutekunst and Mike McCarthy both report directly to Mark Murphy which means that Gutekunst does not have the power to hire or fire the head coach.
