On Thursday night, the Gonzaga University women’s basketball team took the court in the Kennel to take on Grand Canyon University (1-6), defeating GCU 62-58 in a closely contested battle.
Lauren Whittaker led the way with a dominant showing, posting a 24-point, 13-rebound double-double, her third double-double of the season.
The game got off to a sluggish start, with Grand Canyon heading into the first media timeout up 8-4. The Zags' offense picked up after the timeout, going on a quick 6-0 run to regain the lead. The first quarter ended with the Zags up 16-11.
The Zags let the Lopes back into the lead late in the first half amid a three-minute Zags scoring drought in which GU also committed five turnovers.
