CHARLOTTESVILLE – The lack of music at Virginia’s first football practice this spring wasn’t inspired by a Don McLean ballad. Tuesday wasn’t the day the music died, or anything quite so melancholy.

“We plan to make our own,” Bronco Mendenhall said.

It’s the third-year coach’s latest reminder to his team that everything in his program is earned and that the Cavaliers have all they need to succeed in each other. It’s a theme this spring for a team coming off its first bowl appearance since 2011.
