Saints analysis notebook: It's a bad year to be a free-agent safety

Kenny Vaccaro picked a bad year to reach free agency.

Before suffering a season-ending injury, it looked like the safety was on pace to cash in on the open market. But even if Vaccaro had remained healthy and maintained his torrid pace during the first half, he still might have found a soft market.

The simple fact is things aren't lining up well for safeties. Outside of the one-year, $7 million deal Tyrann Mathieu received from the Houston Texans; there hasn’t been much money flowing toward these guys.

Given how things have played out, New Orleans might have paid more for Kurt Coleman (three years, $18 million) than it otherwise would have if Carolina had released the veteran on March 14 instead of at the end of February.
