Road to Omaha filled with contenders, snubs; four Big Ten teams make 64-team field

Just earn an NCAA regional spot, and you have a legitimate chance to get to Omaha.

The standard late-May rallying cry seems to be gaining more validity in college baseball.

And that makes things difficult on the NCAA’s 10-member selection committee, which has to analyze data points and ratings to determine which 64 teams have the best postseason résumés.

This year’s tournament field was unveiled Monday. Ray Tanner, the committee chair, knows there are folks with valid complaints.

“There’s a lot of teams that can play really good baseball. It’s not easy to get to the 64,” said Tanner, the South Carolina athletic director and former coach who’s served on the Division I baseball committee for three years.
