Packers' Clay Matthews hopes pass rush thrives despite depth that’s ‘not that great’

GREEN BAY — Clay Matthews meant no disrespect.

But the Green Bay Packers’ all-time sack leader is also a realist, and he knows what it means — for him and for fellow starting outside linebacker Nick Perry — that the team didn’t add any edge rushers in free agency and picked only one (Southeast Missouri State project Kendall Donnerson, in the seventh round) during last month’s NFL draft.

It means that while the Packers bolstered their secondary with first-round pick Jaire Alexander and second-round pick Josh Jackson, they’ll be counting on him and Perry to stay healthy this season — and for their young backups to do more than they have to this point in their brief NFL careers.
