Oakland Raiders finally cut suspended pass rusher Smith

The Oakland Raiders released Aldon Smith on Monday, hours after he reportedly checked into rehab following a domestic-violence incident involving his new fiancee.

San Francisco police responded to a call Saturday night from Smith's fiancee alleging that the former NFL star bit her wrists before climbing out the window and fleeing the scene.

It's unclear why Smith, who re-signed with the Raiders on a two-year deal prior to the 2016 campaign, remained on the team's roster. He was largely absent from the organization for the better part of the past two-plus years, and now coach Jon Gruden has officially closed the door on a long-shot return.
