NFL draft preview: Clay Matthews could flourish in new scheme but he needs help at linebacker

GREEN BAY — Mike McCarthy has a new favorite phrase — “multi-positional.”

He’s used it about a few of his guys on offense this offseason (including Jimmy Graham, Randall Cobb and Ty Montgomery), and given his vision for Clay Matthews, the Green Bay Packers' coach might want to apply the adjective to him in new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme.

After years of talk about making the six-time Pro Bowl linebacker harder for opposing offenses to game-plan for by moving him around the defensive formation — only to have former defensive coordinator Dom Capers, more often than not, opt for the familiarity of keeping Matthews in essentially the same spot down-in and down-out — McCarthy insists Matthews won’t be a stationary object this season.
