Jacksonville Jaguars' $54 million extension for Bortles doesn't mean they're sold on him long term

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced Saturday evening that they’ve signed QB Blake Bortles to a contract extension through 2020. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the new three-year, $54 million deal maxes out at $66.5 million and includes $26.5 million guaranteed.

Bortles, the third overall pick in 2014, was set to play on his fifth-year rookie option at approximately $19 million but now receives an additional $7 million guaranteed this season.

The Jaguars, who announced contract extensions through 2021 for vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin, GM David Caldwell and head coach Doug Marrone on Friday, will likely receive some ’18 cap flexibility with Bortles’ extension without shackling themselves to the talented but inconsistent passer who turns 26 draft weekend.
