In spring game, Spiders hope to start recapturing 2008 championship defensive magic

If spring games unofficially start a new football year, there should be some commemorative celebration at Robins Stadium Saturday.

The University of Richmond kicks off its spring game at 1 p.m., and the 10th anniversary of the Spiders’ FCS championship is 2018. UR’s 2008 team was 4-3 before winning nine straight, capping that run with a 24-7 victory over Montana in the title game, played in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The then-to-now bridge is Russ Huesman, in his second year as Richmond’s coach and the defensive coordinator on the championship team. One of the Spiders’ goals in 2018 is forming a defense that resembles the one that led the way in 2008.
