For many college athletes, the monetization of name, image and likeness has opened exciting new doors — and a few confusing ones. Gonzaga University’s new Sports Law Clinic is here to help, offering legal guidance to athletes while allowing law students to learn from real clients in a rapidly changing field.
Since opening in the past year, GU’s Sports Law Clinic is the first of its kind in Washington. As the monetization of athletes’ NIL has expanded, so too has the need for education around contracts, taxes and regulations.
Director Christopher Mercado said the clinic's mission is rooted in educating student-athletes, coaches and university officials about NIL deals and NCAA regulations.
