There’s no shortage of familiarity between Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and the Virginia Tech football staff. Gundy played college football as a teammate of Hokies’ offensive line coach Vance Vice with the Cowboys. He worked on a staff at OSU with Tech offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen.
But maybe the most intriguing tie between the Cowboys coach and his opponent in the Dec. 28 Camping World Bowl – Gundy recruited Hokies coach Justin Fuente as a high school prospect in Oklahoma.
“We really wanted him,” Gundy, Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator at the time, said. “It didn’t work out well for us, but we really wanted him at that time.
