Tom Watson defies age with first-round 66 at U.S. Senior Open

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — News headline: Golfer Tom Watson, 65, has declared war on aging. After shooting 66 at Del Paso Country Club to take the first-round lead in the U.S. Senior Open, Watson pretended to be mad.

"Darn," he said, "I wanted to shoot my age in the worst way in a USGA (U.S. Golf Association) championship. I was grinding all the way. My goal was 65, and I was really trying to make that last putt (a 35-footer down a pronounced incline)."

Alas, he missed and had to settle for Route 66. Incredible stuff from a guy who lists his official age as 65 but continues to shoot age-defying golf scores.
