Slumbers: R&A may consider extending Open invite to future LAAC winners

LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic — Since the inception of both events, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and the Latin America Amateur Championship have extended Masters invites to each year's champion.

For the first time last fall, the R&A also awarded the winner of the APAC, Japan's Takumi Kanaya, a spot in The 148th Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

On Thursday at the LAAC's annual Founding Partners news conference, R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers was asked if he would one day offer an Open exemption to Latin America champion.

"We look very carefully at the exemptions into The Open Championship.
