Sammy Schmitz wins US Mid-Amateur, earns Masters spot (The Associated Press)

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Sammy Schmitz won the U.S. Mid-Amateur on Thursday to earn a Masters invitation, making a hole-in-one on the 260-yard, par-4 33rd hole at John's Island Club in a 3-and-2 victory over Marc Dull.

''I can't believe it,'' said the 35-year-old Schmitz, a reinstated amateur from Farmington, Minnesota. ''I've been hitting driver (on the hole) the entire tournament. I think I've hit the green four times. I just had a good feeling. I can't believe it went in.''

It is believed to be only the second ace on a par 4 in USGA amateur competition.
