Rater's notebook: Austin Country Club

Game’s best to get taste of Pete Dye’s little-known Austin Country Club

How this course could get overlooked in the pantheon of Pete Dye’s portfolio is anyone’s guess. During the PGA Tour’s WGC-Dell Match Play later this month, the golf community finally will find out what a strong piece of design is Austin Country Club.

The 180-acre property eight miles northwest of downtown Austin is the club’s third site since its founding in 1899. The late Harvey Penick, a World Golf Hall of Fame member as a teaching professional, was the club’s resident instructor from 1923 (at age 18) until he acquired emeritus status in 1971, whereupon he stayed with the club through its move here in 1984 and remained until his death in 1995.
